Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (M. pneumoniae) is a form of bacterial pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. M. pneumoniae most commonly causes upper respiratory tract infections but can also lead to pneumonia. Approximately 40% of community-acquired pneumonias are due to M. pneumoniae infections, with children and the elderly being the most susceptible. Identification of M. pneumoniae allows for the selection of the appropriate therapeutic regimen.
